Best Buddies Friendship Walk by Suzanna Paul

             Best Buddies Friendship Walk

Best Buddies is an international program that was made just 34 years ago in 1989. Mooresville has its own chapter of this club; it brings together all types of people with intellectual and physical disabilities to people that just don’t usually feel fit in their normal day lives. There is an annual Best Buddies Friendship walk to support these students and to continue the trend of inclusion. It was in Indianapolis and the participants walked near the canal at the Celebration Plaza at White River State Park. It was quite a chilly day, but the support was more important than the temperature.

Zach Strong is one of the many who decided to take part in this event. He was walking next to Best Buddies Vice President, Emalyn McMahan, and they both had quite a good time. There was a bouncy house, food, and other small little tents around the beginning of the walk.

“It was pretty good, I went to the bouncy house by 12 PM,” Strong said.

McMahan had quite a bit to say about the walk. It was her very first time and that made this time just so much special for her. She believed that one of the best parts of the walk was the music. In the beginning she thought that was a good start to the walk.

“It was an amazing experience and I’m glad we could get Zach to go because he had a great time and really loves Indianapolis,” McMahan said.

Best Buddies sponsor Melissa Bell felt so excited to be able to get out there and support the inclusion with the state of Indiana. She also stated that it was so special to see all the Best Buddies being excited for the event.

“We would love to see more people next year,” Bell said.

Mooresville as a group hasn’t been able to go to the Friendship Walk since 2018, because of COVID-19 and other small complications throughout the years, which made this year just as much special and important for these supporters to be able to make it out.
